Temporalis
Posted on 30th Jul 2020 / Published in: Face
General information
The temporalis muscle is a thin, fan-shaped muscle located in the temporal fossa. This muscle makes up the masticatory muscle group, along with the medial pterygoid, lateral pterygoid and masseter muscles.
Literal meaning
The time muscle.
Interesting information
This muscle coordinates mastication due to its main actions producing mandible movements. It is also the strongest muscle of all the muscles acting upon the temporomandibular joint and is the only mandible retractor.
Origin
Temporal fossa below the inferior temporal line and the temporal fascia.
Insertion
All surfaces, except the lateral, of the coronoid process and the anterior margin of the mandibular ramus.
Function
Elevates the mandible; posterior horizontal fibres retract the mandible, assists with side-to-side movements.
Nerve supply
Mandibular branch of trigeminal nerve (Cranial nerve V).
Blood supply
The middle temporal branch of the transverse facial artery, deep temporal arteries that arise from the second part of the maxillary artery.

Relevant research
A temporalis muscle tendon unit transfer may be used as a single-stage procedure for dynamic reanimation of the paralysed face.

Temporalis: Power, Symmetry, and Structure from Temple to Jaw
The temporalis is a powerful, fan-shaped muscle that sits on the side of the head, extending from the temporal fossa down to the coronoid process of the mandible. Best known for its role in jaw elevation, the temporalis is also essential for jaw alignment, facial contour, and maintaining tension balance across the craniofacial system.
When functioning well, it provides vertical facial support and helps preserve a smooth, full temple contour—a key sign of youth and vitality.

Anatomy & Function
- Origin: Temporal fossa of the temporal bone and temporal fascia
- Insertion: Coronoid process of the mandible
- Function:
- Elevates the mandible (closes the jaw)
- Retracts the jaw (pulls it backward)
- Maintains facial vertical dimension and bite balance
- Nerve Supply: Deep temporal branches of the mandibular nerve (CN V3)
- Synergistic Muscles: Masseter, medial pterygoid, digastric (antagonist)
The Problem: Muscle Imbalance, Atrophy, and Tension
The temporalis can become problematic in two major ways:
- Overuse and tension, often from clenching or grinding (bruxism), leading to:
- Temporal headaches
- Facial asymmetry or bulkiness
- TMJ dysfunction and jaw discomfort
- Underuse and atrophy, often due to aging, tooth loss, or poor bite support, leading to:
- Hollowing of the temples
- Loss of lateral facial width
- Weak bite and facial tension imbalance
In either case, midface and mandibular weakness often triggers the temporalis to compensate, which worsens its condition and contributes to a distorted facial experience.
The ISO Metrik Device: Supporting the Temporalis by Strengthening the Mandible
While the ISO Metrik Device does not directly train the temporalis, it supports and relieves it by stabilizing and strengthening the mandible and lower facial muscles, which allows the temporalis to return to balanced function.
How It Helps:
- Strengthens the masseter, orbicularis oris, buccinator, and surrounding jawline muscles—reducing reliance on the temporalis
- Provides intraoral resistance that stimulates mandibular tension and re-trains jaw closure mechanics
- Promotes balanced occlusion, reducing clenching and guarding patterns
- Encourages facial muscle harmony, easing upper facial tension from below
Why the Temporalis Matters
The temporalis muscle defines the temple region, contributes to facial width and balance, and anchors jaw performance and strength. When overworked, it causes pain and imbalance. When under-supported, it leaves the face sunken and weak.
The ISO Metrik Device supports the entire mandibular system, giving the temporalis what it needs: balance, coordination, and relief—so your face looks and feels stronger, more symmetrical, and naturally aligned.
Want a stronger jawline, reduced facial tension, and a fuller temple contour?
