Depressor Supercilii
Posted on 30th Jul 2020 / Published in: Face
General information
The depressor supercilii is a facial muscle located in the eye region.
Literal meaning
The muscle that presses the partition down.
Interesting information
The nature of this muscle is in some dispute. Some consider it to be part of the orbicularis oculi muscle, while others maintain that the depressor supercilii is a distinct muscle and has a definite, individual effect on the movement of the eyebrow and skin of the glabella.
Origin
Midline of the frontal bone near its suture with the nasal bone.
Insertion
Skin and subcutaneous tissue beneath the eyebrow.
Function
Pulls the eyebrow and the skin above the orbit downward.
Nerve supply
Facial nerve (Cranial nerve VII).
Blood supply
Supraorbital and supratrochlear arteries from the ophthalmic artery; terminal end of the facial artery.

Relevant research
The dynamic balance of the eyebrows is kept by the frontal muscle which acts as a brow elevator, and the brow depressors including the corrugator supercilii muscle (CSM), procerus, depressor supercilii, and orbicularis oculi muscles

Frown (assisted)
Using your fingers to assist, pull your forehead muscles downwards and inwards, creating a frown. Hold this position, then relax.

Depressor Supercilii: The Silent Brow Muscle Behind Stern Expressions
The depressor supercilii is a small, vertically-oriented muscle located near the medial (inner) part of the eyebrow. It functions to pull the eyebrow downward, contributing to intense, focused, or stern expressions. Though it’s not as famous as the corrugator or frontalis, the depressor supercilii has a direct influence on the appearance of the upper face, especially the brow and glabella region.

Anatomy & Function
- Origin: Medial orbital rim of the frontal bone
- Insertion: Skin near the medial aspect of the eyebrow
- Function:
- Pulls the eyebrow downward, especially medially
- Assists in forming vertical glabellar lines
- Works with corrugator supercilii and orbicularis oculi for frowning and brow control
- Nerve Supply: Temporal and zygomatic branches of the facial nerve (CN VII)
- Synergistic Muscles: Corrugator supercilii, procerus, orbicularis oculi
The Problem: Overactivity, Tension & Aged Expressions
When the depressor supercilii becomes overactive—often from chronic stress, unbalanced facial muscle use, or compensation due to midface weakness—it can lead to:
- A heavier, lowered inner brow
- Prominent glabellar lines (frown lines or “11s”)
- A tense or angry appearance, even at rest
- Reduced eye openness or expression around the eyes
- Imbalance between the forehead and brow movement, causing asymmetry
Over time, this contributes to aging and emotional miscommunication, making the face appear more tired, tense, or unapproachable.
The ISO Metrik Device: Midface Activation That Lifts the Load
The ISO Metrik Device, while not directly targeting the depressor supercilii, provides indirect relief and balance by activating the mid- and lower-face muscles that should be sharing expressive effort. When these deeper systems are strong, the upper face—including the brows—can relax into a more natural, youthful posture.
How the Device Helps:
- Strengthens muscles like the zygomaticus major/minor, orbicularis oris, and levator labii superioris, which elevate the midface and reduce dependency on the brow to “hold the face up”
- Restores muscular harmony, balancing upward and downward pull in the upper face
- Relieves subconscious facial tension, allowing the depressor supercilii to return to its subtle, supportive role
- Promotes a more open, refreshed eye and brow appearance over time
Why the Depressor Supercilii Matters
This small muscle plays a big role in how you’re perceived. When it’s tight or dominant, the result is a look of fatigue, frustration, or sternness. But when balanced within the facial system, it supports subtle, expressive brow movement that enhances—not overwhelms—your natural appearance.
The ISO Metrik Device restores this balance by re-engaging the muscle systems below, allowing the brow to lift, soften, and relax—naturally, without injections or surgery.
Want a softer brow, fewer frown lines, and a more approachable expression?
